Senator Kingibe Demands Apology from Wike for Offensive Remarks: A Call for Respect in FCT Politics

Senator Kingibe Ireti, representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has put forward a bold demand for an apology from Nyesom Wike, the FCT Minister. This request stems from Wike’s recent comments threatening to unseat her in the 2027 elections.

The relationship between Kingibe and Wike has been fraught with tension since they took office, with both politicians exchanging sharp criticisms. Wike questioned Kingibe’s achievements and contributions since her election, which the senator found particularly offensive given their differing ages and his tone.

Kingibe has expressed her willingness to collaborate with Wike, but only if he offers a formal apology for his remarks, including a particularly disparaging comment suggesting she should “hang on a transformer.” She emphasized that such statements are not only disrespectful but also contrary to the principles of effective governance.

“Governance is not about friendship; it’s about service and respect,” Kingibe stated. “I am willing to move forward and work together if the Minister offers a proper apology. Until then, everyone should maintain their boundaries. Respect is due, and courtesy demands that he addresses me appropriately.”

The conflict escalated on July 1, when Wike, during the launch of the Mabushi Bus Terminal construction in Abuja, criticized Kingibe’s performance and declared she would not secure re-election in 2027. He challenged her legislative record, questioning her contributions to education and healthcare improvements.

Kingibe, a member of the Labour Party, defeated Wike’s ally, Philip Aduda, in the 2023 election. Since then, she has accused Wike of marginalizing her and failing to address the needs of FCT residents, particularly amid rising insecurity. Wike, in turn, attributed Kingibe’s criticism to her dissatisfaction over not being appointed as the chairperson of the Senate Committee on the FCT.

As the political landscape in Abuja continues to evolve, the need for respectful dialogue and collaboration between leaders remains crucial for the progress of the capital city.
