Chidimma Adetshina Invited to Miss Universe Nigeria Amid Miss South Africa Controversy
Chidimma Adetshina has received an official invitation from the Miss Universe Nigeria organization to compete in the Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 pageant. This invitation comes after Adetshina’s recent withdrawal from the Miss South Africa pageant, which followed a storm of controversy regarding her citizenship.
The announcement was made in a statement from Guy Murray-Bruce, the National Director of Miss Universe Nigeria, on Saturday. Adetshina, a 23-year-old law student from Soweto, South Africa, had gained considerable attention when she decided to step away from the Miss South Africa competition, citing serious concerns about her safety and that of her family.
Her withdrawal occurred after an inquiry by South Africa’s Home Affairs Department, which suggested that her mother might have engaged in “identity theft” to secure South African citizenship. This led to heightened scrutiny and backlash.
On August 8, Chidimma took to Instagram to announce her decision to withdraw, expressing gratitude for the experience but stressing her need to prioritize her and her family’s safety. She wrote, “Being part of the Miss South Africa 2024 competition has been an incredible journey; however, after much reflection, I have decided to withdraw for the sake of my family’s and my safety. I am deeply thankful for the support of the Miss South Africa Organisation and leave with a heart full of appreciation.”
In response to these events, Miss Universe Nigeria has shown its support and extended a formal invitation to Adetshina. “We have been following the situation closely and understand the difficulties you are facing,” the statement read. “Given the circumstances, we want to offer our support and extend an invitation for you to compete in the Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 pageant. This is a chance for you to represent your father’s homeland on a global stage, and we believe you would be a remarkable contestant.”
The organization encouraged Chidimma Adetshina to consider this opportunity and assured her of their assistance. “If you choose to participate, simply respond to this invitation, and we will guide you through the next steps. We eagerly await your decision and hope to see you continue your pageant journey with Miss Universe Nigeria,” the statement added.
The Miss Universe pageant, held annually since 1952, is one of the world’s most esteemed beauty contests, alongside Miss World, Miss International, and Miss Earth. It features contestants from around the world competing in evening gown, swimsuit, and a final question-and-answer segment. The winner receives a crown, cash prizes, and numerous opportunities, including endorsements and involvement in charitable causes.
