Court Imposes Restrictive Order on Abuja Protesters: A Blow to Public Demonstrations

Justice Sylvanus Oriji of the Federal Capital Territory High Court has imposed a restriction on protesters participating in the August 1 demonstration, confining them to the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja.

The ruling came after Justice Oriji reviewed an ex-parte application filed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. Wike’s counsel, Ogwu Onoja, argued for an interim injunction to prevent the five leaders of the protest from gathering or parading on roads, streets, offices, or other public areas within the FCT from August 1 to August 10, pending a further hearing.
