Kano Court Orders Detention of 632 Protesters for Alleged Destruction During #EndBadGovernance Protests

On Tuesday, a mobile court in Kano State issued an order to detain 632 individuals accused of damaging public and government properties during the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests.

The defendants face multiple charges, including criminal conspiracy, theft, unlawful assembly, inciting public unrest, trespassing, and arson.

The session was overseen by three senior judicial figures: Senior Magistrate Ibrahim Yola, Senior Magistrate Hadiza Bello, and Chief Magistrate Abba Dandago. Following the order for their remand, the court postponed the hearing until August 19th.

Earlier, Salisu Tahir, the State Director of Public Prosecution, informed the court that the alleged crimes took place on August 1st, during the nationwide protests. According to him, the defendants engaged in acts of trespass and vandalism, targeting government and public assets in Kano State.

The prosecution stated that these actions violated sections 97, 287, 229, 336, 349, and 247 of the Penal Code.

In Kano court, some defendants admitted guilt, while others denied the charges.

Following the court session, Kano State Attorney General, Haruna Dederi, informed journalists that the state had established three mobile courts to handle the cases against the protesters.

“I requested the Kano State Chief Judge to authorize the formation of three Special Courts within the state police headquarters due to the large number of defendants,” Dederi explained.

He further stated that the Ministry of Justice would review the case files and provide necessary legal advice before the next hearing.
