Labour Party Demands Senator Onyewuchi’s Resignation
The Imo State Chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has demanded that Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi resign from the Nigerian Senate following his defection to the All Progressive Congress (APC). The LP issued a three-day ultimatum to Senate President Godswill Akpabio to declare Onyewuchi’s seat vacant or face legal action.
The call for resignation stems from Onyewuchi’s switch from LP to APC. According to reports, Onyewuchi, who represents Imo East, resigned from the LP on July 23, 2024, citing internal conflicts. However, the LP views this move as shameless and a betrayal of the trust they placed in him.
In a letter to Senate President Akpabio dated July 26, the LP expressed regret for supporting Onyewuchi in the 2023 elections, highlighting how the party’s support was crucial to his political revival after his defeat in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries. The LP emphasized that Onyewuchi’s mandate was granted by the party and should not be carried to APC.
LP Publicity Secretary Bright Ofurum criticized Onyewuchi for never attending party meetings or functions and labeled his defection as a significant political mistake with serious consequences. He pointed out that Onyewuchi was elected on the LP’s platform and that the electorate voted for the party, not for him personally.
The LP has called for Onyewuchi’s immediate resignation and for the Senate President to declare his seat vacant, in accordance with section 68 (2) of the Constitution. With this defection, APC now controls all three senatorial zones in Imo State.
