Shocking: Pastor Sentenced to 8 Years for Raping Church Member’s Wife in Imo State

In a landmark judgment, Justice T. N. Nzeukwu of the Imo State High Court has sentenced Pastor Desmond Eke to eight years in prison for the rape of a church member’s wife. The pastor, who is the founder of Deliverance Ministry of the Good Shepherd located in Umuehieta Avu, Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, was found guilty of abusing the trust of the woman, who had placed immense faith in him.

During the trial, the prosecution counsel, Chioma Emuka, revealed the disturbing details of the crime. According to Emuka, Pastor Eke administered a stupefying substance to his victim, which left her disoriented and weak. It was in this vulnerable state that the pastor took advantage of her. The woman reportedly regained consciousness during the act, finding the pastor still violating her. When questioned, Eke allegedly claimed that his semen was “holy” and would rid her of the marine spirit that was tormenting her.

Justice Nzeukwu, in delivering the verdict, found Eke guilty on the charges of breach of trust and rape, sentencing him accordingly. However, the judge acquitted him of the third charge related to causing injury during the rape, reasoning that the lack of resistance due to the victim’s unconscious state meant that no injuries could have occurred.

Before the sentence was passed, the defense counsel made a plea for leniency, citing Eke’s consistent attendance in court and good behavior during the trial. The defense requested probation instead of a full sentence, but the court ultimately handed down the eight-year imprisonment.

This case marks a significant moment in Imo State as it is the first to be prosecuted under the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act. The civil society organization, Onurube, played a critical role in bringing the matter to court and ensuring justice was served. Marjorie Ezihe, the convener of Onurube, praised the court’s decision, expressing hope that the conviction would deter others from committing similar heinous acts.
