Protest marred by Foreigners- IGP

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has disclosed that intelligence reports indicate the involvement of foreign mercenaries in the planned nationwide protest. Speaking to journalists in Abuja on July 26, Egbetokun advised Nigerians to exercise caution and carefully consider their participation in any demonstration groups.

He explained that the police have been monitoring the situation closely. While some groups are calling for violent demonstration similar to recent events in Kenya, others are advocating for peaceful demonstrations. However, Egbetokun noted that some advocates of peaceful demonstrations have been found to harbor violent intentions, raising concerns about their true motives. He emphasized that Nigeria’s history of violent protests underscores the risks associated with unchecked demonstrations, and praised those who have withdrawn from the protest due to concerns about the underlying intentions and potential for violence.

Egbetokun also acknowledged that some individuals have voiced opposition to any form of protest at this time, citing fears that enemies of the country might be manipulating the situation. He confirmed that these concerns are valid, as credible intelligence has revealed the presence of foreign mercenaries in the planned demonstration. The Nigerian police continue to urge citizens to be cautious and deliberate before aligning with any demonstration group.
