Rivers State Crisis: PDP Calls for Peace
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for peace among its members ahead of the State Congresses, starting with the Ward Congresses on July 27.
A senior member of the PDP National Working Committee, speaking anonymously due to lack of authorization, disclosed that the party faces significant challenges exacerbated by existing crises in state chapters.
The source noted a court order halting proceedings in Rivers State, with ongoing turmoil in other states further complicating the congress initiation process.
He stated, “The Congresses will start on July 27 across the country. We will begin with Ward Congresses, followed by Local Government Congresses on August 26, and then the State Congresses in September.
“We have challenges in some states. These states include Kebbi, Kaduna, Katsina, Rivers, Ekiti, among others. The party is mindful and does not want to go into the Congresses with these crises. So, we are doing everything within our reach to resolve all these issues.
“The issues in these states are about conflicting interests. But nothing is beyond reconciliation, and we will resolve all issues for the sake of the party’s future.”
Responding, PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, called on all party members to embrace peace.
In an exclusive interview, Abdullahi expressed optimism that the party would conduct the Congresses peacefully and emerge stronger.
He stated, “We are aware that there are issues in a few states, and we are trying to resolve some of these issues. But we are confident in the efforts that the party has put in to ensure that this Congress will go well.
“Of course, party management is the most difficult democratic process. So we really need to be confident, and we are confident that the efforts we have put in place so far suggest that we will get it at least 70 to 80 per cent right, ensuring that credible people are returned to these leadership positions”.
