Shocking Blaze Destroys 40 Shops in Abuja Market: A Heartbreaking Loss and Swift Response
Fire has devastated a part of the Kaura Modern Market in Abuja, located across from the Prince and Princess market in the Kaura District. The blaze broke out around 11 pm on Friday night and completely destroyed 40 shops, resulting in the loss of various goods, including foodstuffs, appliances, and household items.
According to a report from the Acting Director of the FCT Fire Service, Amiola Adebayo, the fire was ignited by an electrical spark from a power change-over unit in one of the shops, which was further fueled by a generator stored inside the same shop.
The fire department received the emergency call at 11:11 pm and managed to control the flames by 1:59 am, thanks to the joint efforts of the FCT and Federal Fire Services. The report details that the fire affected a block with 39 foodstuff shops, with items such as generators, refrigerators, fruits, umbrellas, electrical appliances, and various household goods being lost.
The Director has yet to confirm if there were any casualties or injuries. Regarding criticisms about the response time, Adebayo mentioned that network issues delayed initial contact but assured that fire crews arrived within 10-12 minutes of the call, with additional assistance arriving shortly afterward.
