Bread Seller

Stunning: How UNICAL mobilized Bread seller and 54 others for NYSC

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has made a startling revelation: a bread seller was once listed among University of Calabar’s graduates for the mandatory national service. In response to this and other irregularities, the NYSC has deactivated 54 improperly mobilized graduates to ensure that only qualified individuals receive Certificates of National Service.

The NYSC’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, shared this update in a statement on Friday, which highlighted that Brigadier-General Yusha’u Ahmed, the NYSC Director General, revealed these issues in Abuja. He added that legal action will be pursued against those involved.

The 54 individuals include 19 who had initially registered online but were barred from service, and four whose Certificates of National Service were not issued by the Scheme. Earlier this week, the NYSC also invalidated the certificates of 101 UNICAL graduates who had been wrongly mobilized between 2021 and 2023.

In the wake of these revelations, the Pro-Chancellor of UNICAL, DIG Udom Ekpoudom (retd.), praised the NYSC for uncovering the fraudulent mobilizations and promised to address the issue with university staff.

The NYSC DG also noted that while a bread seller was improperly included on the graduation list, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi, deserves commendation for alerting the NYSC about the discrepancies. Ahmed emphasized the need for integrity among those handling graduate data and called on employers to verify the authenticity of Certificates of National Service.
