215,267 WAEC RESULTS WITHHELD
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that 73.79% of the candidates who sat for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) achieved a credit or higher in at least five subjects, regardless of whether they included English Language and Mathematics. Dr. Amos Dangut, Head of the Nigeria Office of WAEC, made this announcement on Monday, highlighting the results of this year’s examination.
The 2024 WASSCE, which took place over a span of seven weeks and six days from April 30 to June 24, saw a total of 1,805,216 candidates participating across the region. Dr. Dangut disclosed that out of this total, WAEC has withheld the WAEC results of 215,267 candidates, which represents 11.92% of all those who took the exam. This action was taken due to various issues related to examination malpractice.
According to Dangut, a significant portion of the candidates—1,301,941, or 72.12%—secured credits in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. Meanwhile, the results for 1,685,889 candidates, equivalent to 93.39%, have been fully processed and released. However, 119,327 candidates, or 6.61%, still have some of their results pending due to ongoing resolution of issues.
The number of withheld WAEC results for 2024 is notably lower than the previous year’s figure of 16.29%, marking a 4.37% reduction in cases of withheld results. This decline reflects WAEC’s ongoing efforts to combat examination malpractice and improve the integrity of the examination process.
Dr. Dangut attributed the issue of withheld WAEC results to various forms of examination misconduct, including the increasing use of cell phones during exams, despite existing bans, and organized cheating in some schools. He emphasized that these cases are under thorough investigation and that reports will be reviewed by the appropriate committee for final decisions. Affected candidates will be notified of the committee’s decisions through their respective schools. Candidates may also seek redress for their cases via WAEC’s official website.
The 2024 examination was conducted across four WAEC member countries: Nigeria, Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. In Nigeria alone, out of the 1,805,216 candidates, there were 896,894 males and 908,322 females, representing 49.68% and 50.32% of the total, respectively.
In addition to addressing examination malpractice, Dangut also highlighted financial issues affecting the council. He pointed out that WAEC results for candidates from states with outstanding debts to WAEC will remain withheld until payment is made. He urged the concerned states to settle their dues to facilitate the release of the affected results.
This briefing underscores WAEC’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of its examinations while navigating challenges such as financial constraints and misconduct. The council continues to address these issues with a view toward ensuring fair and accurate WAEC results for all candidates.
